Is it biblical to burn a Qu’ran?

Although the incident has passed some time ago, the question is still relevant: should a Christian burn a Qur’an? (I would rather ask whether it is biblical to burn a Qur’an.) The majority of Christians will disagree, and I agree with those who disagree. First off, retaliation is not the best way to get a message across. It just adds fuel to the fire. Secondly, Muslims burn the Bibles in order to instill fear in us; but they are ignorant of the fact that we worship not the Bible, but the God of the Bible. They can burn as many Bibles in the world as they want, yet they cannot burn the living Word of the Lord God from people’s hearts. The apostles never went around burning religious literature of other religions in order to defend themselves – that is unChrist-like! Why use the same strategies as our enemies? What difference does Jesus Christ’s teachings make? Defending ourselves comes naturally when attack but to retaliate only generates further trouble without solving the problem.

Islam is a physical threat to the Church as well as to the entire world. The New Testament is full of scriptures that encourage the followers of Christ to partake in His suffering. It’s an honor to suffer for the One who suffered for us! He had more authority to stop the torture He had to go through, yet He obeyed God His Father unto death. How much more should we!? The world is bound to hate Jesus Christ, and hence His followers: If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before [it hated] you.” John 15:18 and again “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.” Matt 24:9 Did the Lord literally mean that the world will hate or did He mean metaphorically? He always spoke plainly to His disciples.

We are not to fear the physical death but rather the spiritual death! “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear Him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Matt 10:28 When we refuse to deny Christ before a Muslim, who may be ready to behead us if we reject Allah, that refusal is worth more than burning a religious book! When the apostles and the Church was persecuted, this did not stop the Gospel from spreading but rather the persecution acted as a catalyst to further the Gospel of Christ Jesus!

The armour of God described in Ephesians 6 does not list ‘retaliation’ as a weapon because the weapons described are spiritual since we wage war against Satan and his forces in the unseen realm. Let us rather fight the deceiving doctrines that have infiltrated the Church destroying her from within and endangering the spirits of people! May we always seek God’s wisdom rather than depend on our intelligence, let God be obeyed at all times.
